General Bio grows GLP-1 and other peptides inside edible microbes, delivered as low-cost oral powders.

The problem
One in eight US adults now takes a GLP-1. The first oral versions reached the market this year, but they hit the same wall: absorption. So little of an oral peptide survives the gut that a pill needs close to 50 times more active compound than the injection. At up to $100,000 a kilogram to synthesise, that turns a 20-cent dose into a roughly $150 monthly supply. And because only a handful of pharma giants can manufacture these molecules at scale, pricing stays concentrated in their hands. The barrier to a cheap, effective oral GLP-1 is cost.
The solution
General Bio uses DNA engineering to express therapeutic peptides directly inside a volcanic microbe discovered in George Church's lab in 2023, a distant relative of edible spirulina that doubles every two hours and grows through photosynthesis using CO2 as its feedstock, without the stainless-steel fermentation tanks or sugar inputs conventional biomanufacturing depends on. Its thick cell wall acts as a natural enteric capsule, shielding the peptide from stomach acid and releasing it further down the tract, so the GLP-1 can be swallowed as a stable room-temperature powder, with no injection and no specialty pharmacy. Because the peptide stays locked inside an edible cell, General Bio also skips downstream purification, the step that can account for up to 80% of peptide manufacturing cost. That is how it reaches its $3 to $5 per patient per day target. Three products are now in development for a 2027 launch at a new cGMP facility in Fremont, California, built with Persist AI and Valentia Analytical, and the Oxford-based company is already lining up North American distribution partners.
